Rider Information
Welcome Aboard HEAT!
Made possible by federal and state grants and the financial support of our seven (7) university and college partners, HEAT (Higher Education Area Transit) is providing enhanced and expanded transportation services to the entire Greensboro community. The specific schools located along the HEAT routes include: Bennett College; Elon University School of Law; Greensboro College; Guilford College; Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC Jamestown and Greensboro campuses); North Carolina A&T State University; and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG)

HEAT operates six (6) routes as follows:
East HEAT – An eastbound route that serves downtown Greensboro, Bennett College, NC A&T and the GTCC Greensboro campus.
West HEAT – A westbound route that serves downtown, Elon University School of Law, Greensboro College, UNCG, Friendly Center and Guilford College.
East/West Evening and Weekend Service – Featuring most of the stops for Routes 70 and 71, this service runs until around 3 AM on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and provides Sunday service, too!
City HEAT – A downtown circulation route with service to Elon University School of Law, Greensboro College, NC A&T, UNCG and the nightlife, entertainment and restaurants of downtown Greensboro.
UNCG HEAT – A shuttle service route between the UNCG campus and student housing complexes located west of campus in the general vicinity of Spring Garden Street and Walker Avenue.
Tech HEAT – A supplemental service for the existing GTA Route 11 that will operate between the Depot and the GTCC-Jamestown campus to provide more frequent and direct service to and from the Jamestown campus.
A&T HEAT – A shuttle service route between the A&T campus, student housing complexes located in the McConnell Road, Benbow Road and Sullivan Street areas, and the Bessemer Avenue shopping district.
HEAT and GTA bus services do not operate on the following holidays: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

HEAT schedules are also affected by college and university calendars. For the 2006/2007 school year, HEAT service will operate beginning on Tuesday, August 8 and end on December 22; spring 2007 semester service will begin on Tuesday, January 2 and end on Saturday, May 12. Fares

Qualified students from 7 schools will be able to ride HEAT service and all other GTA fixed route service on a fare-free basis. Schools that are providing local matching funds to enable their qualified students to ride HEAT and the entire GTA fixed route system include:
Bennett College
Elon University School of Law
Greensboro College
Guilford College
Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC Greensboro and Jamestown campuses)
North Carolina A&T State University
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG)

Eligible students from Greensboro College, Guilford College, North Carolina A&T and UNCG will be able to ride HEAT and GTA buses on a fare-free basis with their school-issued identification cards. Eligible students from Bennett College, Elon University School of Law and GTCC will be issued HEAT farecards for each semester.

All other students and riders will be required to pay the regular, one-way cash fare of $1.10 or enjoy savings with the purchase of multi-ride passes. Click here to view the current GTA fare structure.

HEAT fare cards are not transferable and may require the bearer to also show his/her school-issued identification card.

Questions about HEAT and GTA routes, schedules and fares can be directed to GTA Customer Service at 335-6499 between the hours of 5:15 AM and 7 PM Monday through Friday; and between the hours of 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

Welcome Aboard Your GTA Bus!

Passengers may board or exit a HEAT bus at any clearly marked HEAT stop or shelter and at the J. Douglas Galyon Depot located at 236-C East Washington Street in downtown Greensboro.
As you take your seat, please leave the front seats for seniors or passengers with disabilities. Please occupy only one seat and place purses, packages and other personal items safely at your feet within your seat area.
To signal the bus to stop, please pull down on the cord located directly over the window. Please signal for the vehicle to stop as you approach your desired shelter or stop.
If you are uncertain about your stop location, please ask your operator and they will happily assist you.





  Welcome to the J. Douglas Galyon Depot

Originally built in 1927 as a Southern Railway train terminal, the J. Douglas Galyon Depot serves as a multi-modal transportation facility that includes the GTA Transfer Center. Located at 236-C East Washington Street in downtown Greensboro, the J. Douglas Galyon Depot hosts other transportation providers, including Amtrak, Carolina Trailways, Greyhound and PART Express. Transit operations began at the state's largest historic station in August of 2003.
The Greensboro Transit Authority has been providing transportation services to Greensboro residents and visitors since 1991. In the past year alone, GTA transported nearly 3 million riders to their jobs, homes and schools.

For students and Greensboro citizens traveling to and from area universities and colleges, Higher Education Area Transit (HEAT) routes serves the following campus stop locations:
Bennett College, Outbound – East Washington Street (near Bennett Street)
Bennett College, Inbound – East Washington Street (near Bennett Street)
Elon University School of Law – Stops located at Friendly & Greene and Market & Commerce
Greensboro College – West Market Street and College Place
Guilford College – Binford Hall
GTCC - Greensboro Campus – Adult Education Center
GTCC – Jamestown Campus – Montgomery Circle near Williams Health Career Center
North Carolina A&T State University – Closest stops located at Market and Laurel and at Market and Benbow
UNCG: McIver Building, Graham Building, Library Tower, Spring Garden and Kenilworth

UNCG – Additional stops on Route 73: Walker and Warren, Walker and Tremont, Walker and Chapman, Walker and Elam, Spring Garden and Mayflower, Spring Garden and Eula, and Spring Garden and Chapman


Rider Guidelines and Safety Convenience

Animals - Only trained guide and service animals assisting persons with disabilities are permitted on vehicles. Click here to read our Service Animal Policy.

Bicycle Racks – HEAT and GTA buses are equipped with bicycles racks located on the front of the vehicle. The racks can accommodate two (2) bicycles and passengers are solely responsible for safely securing and removing their bicycles from the rack. Bicycles are accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis; bikes are not permitted on board vehicles. Loading and unloading bicycles on HEAT and GTA vehicles is the sole responsibility of the rider. As your bus approaches, please have your bike ready to load. Please secure any loose items on the bike. Once the vehicle comes to a stop, please make sure your operator is aware that you will be loading a bicycle onto the bus bicycle rack. HEAT and GTA are not responsible for your bicycle while in transit.
From the curbside, lower the light-weight rack and lift your bike into position in the rack’s wheel wells. Pull the support arm out and up over the front tire of the bike. Once you reach your destination, please advise your operator that you will be removing your bike from the rack. To unload your bike, just follow the loading instructions in reverse.

Cell Phones
– Cellular telephones are permitted to be used on vehicles. Please be considerate of other passengers by keeping your voice low and keeping conversations to a minimum.

Drinking – Please refrain from consuming beverages of any kind while on board vehicles. Closed beverage containers are permitted on board but beverages may not be consumed while on the vehicle.

Eating – Please refrain from eating while on board vehicles.

Headphones – Passengers must use headphones when listening to portable electronic devices. Please keep the volume at a reasonable level to avoid disturbing your fellow riders.

Inclement Weather
– HEAT is sometimes forced to delay or discontinue service in the event of severe weather conditions. Questions about service during extreme weather conditions may be directed to the GTA Customer Service Center at 335-6499 or check our web site at www.greensboro-nc.gov/gta. You may also check your local television or radio news updates or dial 511 or 211 for the latest information on weather-related delays.

Lost and Found – Items found on HEAT and GTA vehicles may be turned into the vehicle operator. Found items also may be dropped off at the J. Douglas Galyon Depot located at 236-C East Washington Street. To report lost items on GTA vehicles please contact our Customer Service Center at 335-6499. Lost items may be picked up at the GTA Administrative Offices, 320 East Friendly Avenue. Items are kept for 30 days; perishable items are discarded the same day.

Smoking – Smoking is not permitted on board GTA vehicles.

Standing Passengers – In the event a seat is not available on your HEAT or GTA bus, you may stand in the aisle behind the yellow line clearly marked on the floor at the front of the vehicle. Please do not sit in the rear door stairwell as it represents a safety hazard to both you and your fellow riders.

Wheelchair Lifts
– All HEAT and GTA vehicles are equipped with wheelchair lifts to better accommodate our riders with disabilities. Lifts can accommodate wheelchairs that do not exceed 30 inches in width, 48 inches in length (measured two inches above the ground) and does not weigh more than 600 pounds when occupied. Wheelchairs must be secured in the area designated on the vehicles and assistance will be provided by your HEAT or GTA operator.
